Unarmed & Dangerous (painting)

Unarmed & Dangerous

16in x 20in
Acrylic on canvas
Purchase:  art@gallery38.com

In a day and age where some law enforcement officers have been increasingly hostile towards unarmed blacks, I felt an desire to touch on that. Using myself as the subject.  Its my way of saying we've been marked from the jumped, convicted for just being born another shade.

"Negus with Ambition"  is written in blood as my way of saying i won't be targeted just on my skin alone because while America may see a nigga with attitude,  its really a King with Ambition pushing towards his dreams. Behind blind lady justice is the 12 members of bland jury and on the other side a pencil and paintbrush which represents art speaking, testifying for me.

Originally i painted this with eyes open but then inspiration from vibing to Vincent Van Goghs art triggered the colorful explosion.

Rollout (Lighthouse) painting

Rollout (Lighthouse)
16in x 20in
Acrylic on canvas

This is what happens when you're watching the movie "Rollbounce"  while having the song" Lighthouse'  by The Roots stuck in your head. Continuing with "Small As A Giant" showing the black lives ignored by America's racial block.  I wanted to showcase how sometimes you need to escape, find a little getaway spot to breathe and reflect. Hopefully for at least the moment to forget the ever present madness.

The Pursuit of Happiness / Happiness Found (Paintings)

The Pursuit of Happiness
20In x 20in
Acrylic on canvas

This painting is part of two part story. With this I wanted to touch on the weight of chasing one's dream. The journey to happiness is a crazy road and if you get caught up you can get thrown off. For a lot of those who go all out to chasing their dreams, the burdens of life came be so heavy.  You may find yourself with next to nothing,  but by faith you keep pushing forwarded,  weary. bent but not broken.

Happiness Found
20in x20in
Acrylic on canvas

With the second piece in the two part story I wanted to touch on achieving your dream. You've made it to where your happiness resides. Whether its family, financial success, love whatever it is you've been in pursuit of you've got it. A while ago i started using these orange golden balls as visuals for a blessing. If your a DBZ fan (one time for my fellow nerds) you understand and catch that the blessings are essentially dragon balls. In DBZ lore, you gotta collect 7 in order to make a wish. Here i painted the 7, six at his feet and one being given to him by God.

The journey to happiness is long, harsh and twisted. But it is worth it, i wanted to create with these something to inspire myself and others to keep going.  The American Dream is a false package marketed to those of color as only achievable if you follow their rules, their way. I say no, you got to follow your own path, as scary and difficult as it my be. It's your God given constitutional right to pursue happiness.  So to the dreamers, those who feel they've got nothing left.... keep going. Happiness is for you to claim.

Outside Our Dreams (painting)

Outside Our Dreams
16in x 20in
Acrylic

For inquiries: art@gallery38.com

Keeping with the theme of the overlooked lives of. blacks in America. I wanted to touch on how lots of us through our dreams try to make it to America's" Promise land" of #success and happiness.  Yet that that #journey is over dangerous waters and only a few can get in to what will get them there . And even if you do make it into where your dreams will carry you the rest of the way,  it's still not guaranteed that you will be allowed on the other side of "The Wall" where the american dream awaits. I used the #musicians as the example of those who still continue to be themselves even though their opportunity may of slipped away, still vibing, ready for the next shot.
