From Meeting The Future to Flowing on Stage

Meeting Journalism Students

For artist JaFleu, last week went from 0 to 100 real quick. Beginning with meeting with a youth group from Urgent, Inc's F.A.C.E Journalism Institute. Michelle Hollinger, the publisher of The Sistahood arranged for the students to meet with JaFleu the day before the closing of the All Eyez On FLEU solo exhibition for a private viewing where they could pick his mind.

As the young inquiring minds examined the artwork, they delivered hard hitting questions that stemmed beyond "What inspires you?".

Questions that went to touch on subjects of representation in art, the artist's role in today's society and much more.  As Michelle streamed live  the experience on facebook questions poured in. It was an beautifully intimate time. A perfect way of closing the exhibition.

The Norton

Later on that same day, Visualist & JaFleu attended Art After Dark at The Norton Museum of Art. Sitting to listen and support Street Art Revolution's panel it was an pleasant surprised to see the work they participated in earlier this year as well as their names come on the screen.

FLEU at FLO'POCALYPSE

And of course what better way to end the week than performing at  The Broward Center of Performing Arts  as one of the featured spoken word artists at this summer's Flo'pocalypse. An honor JaFleu plans to never let down.

An experience to never be forgotten from rehearsals, to behind the stage last minute practicing in the mirror to taking the stage and leaving it all there.

Behind the Art: Guilty of Innocence

Behind the Art: Guilty of Innocence

Guilty of Innocence
24in x 24in x 1in
Acrylic on canvas

I think this is one of those pieces where people would want me to really breakdown everything happening in the painting. And that's understandable.

Me personally, I think it's one of those pieces that is clear once you're able to see it. But basically as an artist I very much adhere to Nina Simone saying "How can an artist not be a reflection of the times?"... I'm paraphrasing.

But as a black man in America, I cannot use my art to address social issues. Something I've been notorious of doing my whole career. Especially with topics on police brutality.

And so here we are. With "Guilty of Innocence" I wanted to capture how we as black people feel. How we feel we're on America's chopping block constantly.

Here we have a young boy who has not only been shot multiple times by crooked Overseers (Officers)  still being judge and sentence to hung. This my way of symbolizing how the victims are always turned into villains after the fact.

I brought back something I utilized something I used in past pieces about this. The brick wall that separates us. Something crazy to consider when you think of who the President is. I placed signs with the names of some we've lost Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Philando Castile & my homie Anesson "Ano" Joseph. All some of the many victims of police brutality.

This is anti-police... This is anti-the-injustice.

This is just me speaking aloud.

Behind The Art: The American Hustle

Behind The Art: The American Hustle

On first glance this painting probably comes off as some ode to strippers. In actuality it's not about strippers. I when I originally created the watercolor study of what would later become this painting, I wanted to have a conversation about America.

Here's a video of myself creating the watercolor study.

Particularly how America attempts to pimp us on it's poll, teasing us with the opportunity to get higher in life... but forcing us to have to hustle in ways that will strip who we are in pursuit of the mighty dollar.

It's me kind of asking, how far are we willing to go for the American Dream?

While we hustle to get to a better position in life and stack our bread we never fully notice how America can often already have us locked down under their view... and those of us that realize it move to figure how to level up around that.
